An introduction to hand building course, taught fully in English. We will be a group of about 4 students.
Dates: Tuesday February 21, 28, and Tuesday March 7 and 14
Time: 5 pm to 7 pm
Price: 135 euros.
Class 1: Tuesday February 21 from 5pm to 7pm
We will look at the different types of clays, learn about the different types and each student will choose which clay they would like to work with. Students can choose from 6 different types of clay. Then we will discuss options for leaving clay raw or glazing at the end and how this may impact their decision of clay choice.
-Together we will talk about and explore different shapes and designs of the item we are making (for example different types of vase shapes).
-Teacher will spend time demonstrating the coiling techniques – round could, wide/flat coils, and how to properly attach and smooth.
-The teacher will support each student with their project throughout the class.
-By the end of class 1 everyone should be at least half way done with their piece.
Class 2: Tuesday February 28 from 5pm to 7pm
-Everyone will finish the main body of their piece (for example the body of the vase) and receive any support they need to complete their project.
-We will then spend time smoothing and refining the surface of the clay body, or adding any surface characteristics, such as stamps, carvings, etc.
-Then we will demonstrate and discuss attachment options (handles of different kinds as well as other attachment options).
-Students will have the option to paint underglazes onto pieces before they are fired.
-By the end of week 2 all students’ pieces should be entirely finished.
Class 3: Tuesday March 7 from 5pm to 7pm
-Students can make another vase with the skills they have learned, that will not be glazed (will only get one firing and clay will be left raw)
-The students will be able to apply what they have learned in the first two sessions and continue to improve on their hand building techniques.
Class 4: Tuesday March 14 from 5pm to 7pm
-Students will learn all about glazing.
-Students will be able to glaze their first pieces: Teacher will explain and demonstrate what glazes are and how we apply them.
-For the remainder of the class, students can finish their second piece or leave class early.
